In April 2020, the Bio X Cell Fund made a gift to the Upper Valley Humane Society (UVHS). UVHS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal shelter. In addition to shelter and adoption services, UVHS runs many programs for companion animals. These services include a free pet food pantry, spay/neuter clinics, vaccinations, and emergency boarding.

UVHS was established over 50 years ago and has been an important fixture in the Upper Valley ever since. The organization began as a foster care network for pets but quickly grew into a full sheltering facility. UVHS was one of the first animal welfare organizations in the United States to provide positive reinforcement training and behavior resources. The innovative, compassionate sheltering strategies employed by UVHS have received national recognition from American Humane, the American Society for the Prevention of the Cruelty to Animals, and the Humane Society of the United States.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, UVHS has seen an increased demand for their services. Not only have more animals than usual been surrendered to their facility for care, but they have also seen an increase in the number of people utilizing their free pet food pantry. In an effort to keep animal companions and their humans safe, UVHS has added a COVID-19 checklist to the pet care tips available on their website.
